Karl Vejnik

Karl Vejnik was born in 1961 in Carinthia, Austria. From 1993 to 1994, he studied art in Vienna. He lives and works in Ebriach, where he has his own studio, “Im Werk”. He exhibits his work in Austria and abroad, and his art is represented in public and private collections across a number of European countries. His abstract paintings are characterised by layered fields of colour, delicate linework and richly textured surfaces. Regular lines, grids and small marks intermingle with freely painted patches and irregular forms. Areas of white and cream partially obscure darker layers, punctuated by accents of yellow, ochre, red and turquoise. Some contours remain sharply defined, while others disappear beneath subsequent layers of paint. This creates a tension between the structured arrangement of the composition and the freedom of painterly expression. Letters, words and fragments of text also frequently appear in his paintings, functioning both as visual elements and as carriers of meaning. Through his art, Karl Vejnik challenges conventional moral, religious and social assumptions. One of his philosophical sources of inspiration is Nietzsche’s work “Morgenröte”, which inspired the “Um-uns und in-uns” series. He invites viewers to explore the individual layers closely, develop their own interpretations and reflect on what they ordinarily take for granted.
